LOUIS XVI, «MONSIEUR NOTHING»

A hedonist and epicurean, Louis XVI kept a diary and usually wrote down the most important - to his mind - events and hunting trophies: "Deer hunting in Trianon, shot two deer. Evening grace". On some trivial days, the king made an entry "Nothing happened". Thus such notes as "Necker’s report" or "Nothing happened. Aunts came for dinner" alternated with such entries as "A walk to Maille to watch horses, shot two roes".

On July 14, the day the Bastille was stormed, Louis wrote: "Nothing happened".
